Cakes For A Cause 2013 - Coming Soon!

Cakes For A Cause is one of my favorite events of the year!   This year's event will be held Thursday, March 28th at the Mid-Ohio Food Bank from 6pm - 9pm.  We've got some really great bakers lined up and a lot of new faces joining us this year!  All of the event proceeds go directly back to the foodbank's Operation Feed Campaign. 

We've got five fantastic bakers competing in the Sweet Taste of Victory Competition vying for the Golden Spatula award.  Diva Desserts will be back trying to regain her 2011 title and Kitties Cakes will be back defending their 2012 title!  New to the competition this year is Sue Larson owner of LeGateau, Debby from Home Run Cakes and Cosette the Cake Chick!  I can't wait to see goodies they bring for everyone to sample!

Cameron Mitchell Catering, Made From Scratch and Two Caterers will be back serving their creative delicious hors d'oeurves.  The Sweet Carrot will also be back to greet guests as they arrive for the event!  Remember those amazing BBQ Sundaes from last year?  OH. MY. GOODNESS.

Destination Ohio!

We have been dreaming of summer and warmer weather here at the studio and we have destination weddings on the mind! A lot of brides want a destination feel, but would like to get married in Ohio, so we have dreamed up some cute ways to give your wedding that destination feel right here in the heart of it all!

This week we were dreaming of Napa, California and some yummy wine. When it comes to finding the right winery Ohio has a wide selection all over the state. If you want a database of Ohio Winery's go to the Ohio Wine Association. But having looked around there is one that stands out. Fox Hill Vineyard it is a small winery located in the Alexander Valley owned by a lovely looking older couple who truly loves what they are doing, we love that! When people truly care about their product they are going to give you a great experience. New Space: The Ivory Room

On Wednesday we got the exciting chance to preview The Ivory Room and see all of its cuteness!It has an AMAZING view of downtown, with a perfect view of the Scioto Mile. The space hold a 6th story view of downtown. It was a bit of sneak peek! They have just renovated the whole space! The Ivory room is great, because it is a blank slate you can do whatever you like with the space!It would be a great place for wedding. You could have the ceremony, cocktail hour and reception all in one place.There is a parking garage attached to the Miranova. Also it is run by Cameron Mitchell Catering so all the food is super yummy!

Food Truck Friday: Street Thyme

Today we went to burger heaven! A little food truck called Street Thyme! The link takes you to there website where they have loads of information about where they will be! So helpful! It is clear from our photo that our meal was hearty enough for even the burliest of men! The hamburger was simple and wonderful. We sampled the regular cheeseburger and the bacon cheeseburger. They had lots of flavor, which is something that we love! They have great prices for $8.00 you get a drink, chips and a burger! The perfect filling lunch! They are everywhere so checkout their website for where they will be next.

Food Truck Friday: Mya's

Today we went down home to taste some delish fried chicken. Having been to and learned to love the south. I am a bit of fried chicken snob. But after having visited this food truck it is safe to say that there is a little bit south here in the heartland of Ohio. The chicken sandwiches had a wonderfully warm honey dressing with a homemade biscuit. We also sampled the mac and cheese and well it is Asher approved. Overall it was a taste of warm fatty heaven. Mya's is actually named after a four year old girl. The daughter of the owner so don't go asking to see Mya and ask her about her food truck. It won't work.

 Mya's is open on the weekends (Friday,Saturday and Sunday)from 12pm- 8pm across the street from Wholly Craft in Clintonville.

Food Truck Friday: Blu Olive

Today we ate at the Blu Olive! Our first Italian food truck experience. I got a chance to talk to the owner and ask him what his favorite dish was. He told us that it was the sweet Italian sausage sandwich. The sausage he made himself with meat from a local favorite Rife's Market! Yay supporting local business. We also sampled the meatballs. They were delish. Although we did learn a lesson today, that food trucks have a dilemma that restaurants don't have. We didn't have lots of selection, because the Blu Olive is popular and we went a bit later in the day. All of this adds up to food buying. For food trucks it is a guessing game. You don't want to buy too much and then have to throw it out not to mention the wasted money. Or buy too little and then have to cross things off the menu board. After talking with the owner we decided that although it can make customers unhappy buying too little is the better end of the deal, because people will come back to get what they want and it keeps the truck in demand. Food Truck Friday (on Sunday): That Food Truck

This wonderful food truck is being written about a little later than normal, because I got a case of food poisoning. Don't worry not from the food truck! I say this because I know you were, in fact wondering if that is where I got sick. No on the contrary this food truck was far from anything that would make you sick with anything other than delight! We sampled the squash fritters and the lazy chicken sandwich. Let's just say that the whole farm to fork thing they have going on over there is really working for them. Dan Kraus does all the butchering of the meat that they serve. Which made for a very yummy lazy chicken sandwich. Normally Kasey and I are not fans of mole sauce, but the black mole on our sandwich really made the whole thing come together. So yummy! The chicken was super tender and it all just worked so well together. Our squash fritters were the perfect fall side dish! Crispy on the outside and squashy goodness on the inside with a side sauce that made it even better, but I could not tell you what was in it. Overall it was a great fall meal!

 I am happy to say that we made friends with Dan and Steve and they are so cool that they have a website! thatfoodtruck.com.  Most food trucks don't so this going on so it is quite exciting!  They told us that they put this truck together themselves. So fun! So be on the look out Columbus these guys mean business! They are gain popularity in the foodie world!  They also have a blog, which is linked on the website. Food Truck Friday: Leslie's Creperie at Columbus State

We said our journey knew no bounds and boy did we mean it. Although, Kasey and I have both already graduated from college we ventured to Columbus State Community College to find some warm delicious crêpes from Leslie's Creperie . It was technically a food cart (we bent the rules, we really do love crêpes and they promised us that there was going to be a food truck up and running in November). We sampled the grilled cheese crepe and the Nutella one. They were an ooey gooey mess in the best way possible. The perfect lunch on a crisp fall day. The Feta & Spinach Crêpe is their signature crêpe, but they like to do seasonal ones also, like pumpkin spice. Well that is what John our crêpe master told us. Overall it was worth the trip back to college on our journey to taste the best food trucks (cart this time) that Columbus has to offer!

 We were told they are going to be making regular appearances at Columbus state! They will be there starting at 8 am and go til 2:30 on Tuesday and Wednesday.They are also there on Thursdays but only for lunch.

Food Truck Friday: A Grand New Adventure!

Today is the first day of a grand new adventure! We are embarking on a culturally enriching tour of Columbus through the many different food trucks that are located in our fair city. Our journey knows no bounds we are willing to go anywhere and eat the best each truck has to offer! All in the name of research for you our loyal readers.  So keep your eyes peeled next Friday for our first investigative report on a Mexican food truck that we sampled yesterday!

Kitties Cakes - A Cupcake Baker in Columbus Ohio

Look at these babies! How luck were we to receive a sample box of Kitties Cakes cupcakes in our studio? Needless to say we devoured them. Yep. The. Whole. Box. Not kidding!

Kitties Cakes is a hip new cupcake bakery in Columbus Ohio. Kelly and Molly run the show and do all of the yummi-ness creating. They use local and natural ingredients in their cakes.

Did I mention they have some amazing flavor combinations? I'm a big fan of the Potato Chip & Chocolate cupcake. It reminds me of the potato chip cookies mom used to make when I was little. Some of our other favorites was the Cookies 'n Cream (Ash's fave) and the PB&J = pure yummy!

We were thrilled to have Kitties Cakes on hand at Cakes For A Cause 2012 this year. They were new to the scene but took the competition by storm. They were voted best tasting cake by attendees and took home the Golden Spatula with them!

Five of Central Ohio's best bakers compete for your vote - they bake, you taste and vote to give one of them the taste of Sweet Victory! Winner takes all!

Event Recap: Highball Halloween

We were so lucky this year to be selected as the event planner for Highball Halloween.

For those of you who are wondering what that is, let me share. Highball Halloween is a mix of fashion, costume creativity, Short North street party and Halloween all rolled into one. This year we added a little Alice in Wonderland inspiration to the mix! Several blocks of High St are closed (this was the 3rd year) and a stage is built, bars are set up, beer trucks are parked and voila! We've got a fashion show, costume contests, food court, street party and Halloween party.

We had over 20,000 attendees this year and I think everyone had a great view of the 60' runway!



The Grimaldi Circus took the stage first. They were incredible to watch on their high stilts. Nina West was our emcee for the night. She even got a little help from Mayor Coleman as we started the fashion show! Revelers were treated to not 1 but 2 of Nina's amazing performances. They were definitely a hit with the crowd!
